چکیده

You will have done well if you can answer the test your knowledge questions, understand the mean field solution (Sec. IV) and the bonus questions provoke good discussion among your group. You will have done very well if you can get some code working to examine phase transitions and topological defects in a known system (Ising, XY.) You will have made a start on a very interesting scientific paper if you have constructed models using internal state structures, and interaction graphs, that reflect a biological, social, or computational system you or your group-mates have familiarity with – particularly if you can explore its defect structures in the event of a phase transition.

Equation or algorithm: differences and choosing between them.

The issue of whether formal reasoning or a computing-intensive approach is the most efficient manner to address scientific questions is the subject of some considerable debate and pertains not only to the nature of the phenomena and processes investigated by scientists, but also the nature of the equation and algorithm objects they use. Although algorithms and equations both rely on a common ba...

Effects of attention to emergent phenomena on rule discovery

In this study, we focused on effects of finding of emergent phenomena in rule discovery. In the experiment, we used Conway’s Game of Life, which generates high-order phenomena from fundamental rules. Our research question is to realize the effects of attention to emergent phenomena on finding the fundamental rules. The two experimental conditions (chaotic and static) differed only in initial st...

Implications of Observability for the Theory and Measurement of Emergent Team Phenomena

Many of the most pivotal mechanisms of team success are emergent phenomena—constructs with conceptual origins at the individual level that coalesce over time through members’ interactions to characterize a team as a whole. Typically, empirical research on teams represents emergent mechanisms as the aggregate of members’ self-report perceptions of the team. This dominant approach assumes members...

Tracing Conceptual and Geospatial Diffusion of Knowledge

Understanding the dynamics of knowledge diffusion has profound theoretical and practical implications across a wide variety of domains, ranging from scientific disciplines to education and understanding emergent social phenomena. On the other hand, it involves many challenging issues due to the inherited complexity of knowledge diffusion. In this article, we describe a unifying framework that i...

Emergent Causation

The notion of an emergent property has aroused much recent discussion among both scientists and philosophers. Many quite different kinds of properties have been described as ‘emergent’, the only clear common factor being the broad idea that when a physical system of sufficient complexity is in a suitable configuration new properties ‘emerge’ in a way that could not have been predicted from the ...

Processing of Emergent Phenomena in Complex Systems

In this paper are described some properties of emergent phenomena and situations that appear in complex systems. The basic factors for the understanding to emergent processes are: the level of realization and the description of the emergent process, sharp change of the system structure (in our case represented by the violence of a structural invariant), a self-organizing phenomenon (that forms ...
